Chart of the Week (28) - Internet Use

Over the past ten years, internet use in Malta increased by 28 percentage points, from 58% in 2009 to 86% in 2019. The vast array of online activities Maltese internet users tend to engage in has also increased.

Compared to other EU countries, Malta's rate of online activity is above the EU average for most applications, primarily social media participation (71%) with Malta ranking 5th from all 27 EU countries (EU average 54%), use of instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Skype and Messenger with Malta (75%) placing 8th (EU average 65%) and music streaming with an activity rate of 62% compared to the EU average of 51%.

Malta also performs above the EU average in online sale of goods and services by individuals, with the fourth highest rate among all 27 EU member states, albeit the lowest rate of activity (28%) from all online applications.

The only online application where Malta falls below the EU average and currently ranks in 18th place out of all 27 EU countries is online banking.
